There is a misconception that depression is just sadness. While sadness is a part of the depressive experience, it fails to capture the complexity. Depression is a quagmire that may include anger, irritability, lethargy, and anxiety.
Maybe we’re high-functioning depressive. We may work to exhaustion, over-consume alcohol or drugs, compulsively exercise, shop, or spend hours online. These numbing behaviors may allow us to get through the day but leave us little hope for the future.
We may even have the ornaments of a happy life: a stable job, physical health, a circle of friends, and a partner and a family. But these features of our life don’t reflect how we often feel inside.
Liberation from this prison starts with recognizing what depression is trying to tell us. That our mind needs a thorough review and re-organization. None of us consciously chooses to be depressed. We fall into depression due to our early childhood experiences, traumas big and small, and living in a culture of blame and judgment. Depression and shame are inextricably linked.
The two most important aspects of treating depression are compassion and curiosity. As humans, our clever minds work best when we feel secure. Being depressed requires tremendous energy - psychotherapy is the redirection of this energy. Like taming a wild animal, our aggression can be harnessed and utilized to our own benefit.
Therapy with me is learning to move away from self-blame into a regulated and flexible mind-state where we can explore the roots of your depression.
Counseling is a process of reconnecting to your own innate vitality. You already contain the seeds of your own liberation. Allow me to help you nurture them.
